The NMTIA Board is excited to invite you to a Mini-Conference on March 5–6, 2022.
Saturday & Sunday from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm
This mini-conference includes a total of five 2-hour sessions over two days, all online, taught by nationally-renowned language professional trainers Yvette Citizen and Irene Radillo-Diaz. Fantastic professional opportunity for a very reduced cost!
Cost Per Session: $10 members (about $12 with EventBrite fees) / $20 non-members (about $23 with EventBrite fees)
NMTIA will cover the EventBrite fees for members who sign up for all five sessions!
NMTIA will cover the full registration fees of (a) member(s) who volunteers to host the Zoom meeting/monitor the chat for sessions – experience with Zoom preferred

Session 1: Test Prep for Some, Fun Practice for Others
Saturday, March 5, 9:30–11:30 am

Take a mock interpreter certification exam for some good practice and vocabulary building!
Learning Objectives:
Hone your interpreting skills in all three modes by taking a shorter version of the exam and then reviewing it. The first half of the online class will consist of taking the exam. Participants will record their renditions which they will listen to on their own time after the class. During the second half of the class, we will review the exam, the vocabulary, and tricky spots.
This will provide great hands-on practicing for all participants and a good preparation opportunity for those who are getting ready to take a certification exam.
Duration: 2 hours

Session 2: Intro: Forensic Transcription and Translation
Saturday, March 5, 12:00–2:00 pm

This remote workshop is intended for translators and interpreters of any language who are familiar with legal terminology and are interested in exploring FTT as a work option.
Learning Objectives:
Translators and interpreters are often asked to provide a transcription and translation of various kinds of audio, and often agree to do so without any prior training in this area or knowledge of the very demanding and detailed nature of this work. Participants will learn about FTT: its legal importance, why it is requested, who requestors are, why translators and interpreters are a good fit, general challenges and the overall process of providing a FTT from request to delivery. Participants will see a sample transcription and start work on a brief audio & transcription exercise for practice (in English).
Duration: Two-hour session.

Details:
• PowerPoint presentation, sample audio and transcribed text, and an audio for participants to begin working on during the session (which will give hands-on experience in the level of detail required) which they can complete for themselves if desired, at a later time. Instructor will share her preferred format for transcription and translation.
• Participants will be attending remotely: they will be sent a blank Word document for the hands-on exercise to work on.
• This workshop is expected to be interactive!
• Important Note: Participants should be familiar with and ready to use MS Word and must download the blank exercise document BEFORE the workshop.
• Participants should be familiar with how to download an audio file that will be shared via the Chat Box during class.
• Participants should have access to and be familiar with an audio program (such as Audacity, WavePad, Adobe Audition, VLC Media Player, etc.) in order to participate in the hands-on exercise.
Session 3: Conference, Seminar, and Diplomatic Interpreting: Hands-on Practice as We Explore
Different Interpretation Options for the Judicial Interpreter

Class Overview:
This 2-hour online workshop provides participants the opportunity to explore interpretation in non-judicial settings. We will explore the different tactics and adaptations that legal interpreters need to apply when interpreting in different arenas– conferences, diplomatic settings, seminars. We will practice interpreting in different settings.

Session 4: Simul Jam Session

Class Overview: This 2-hour online workshop provides intensive simultaneous interpreting practice for beginning and practicing interpreters. A great opportunity to improve your simultaneous interpreting skills in a non-threatening setting no matter what level.

Session 5: ¡Nos lanzamos!: Forensic Transcription and Translation, Spanish

Target Audience: Spanish language translators and interpreters who may be starting in the field or wish to learn practical hands-on FTT problem-solving.

Learning Objectives:
This hands-on remote workshop is for Spanish translators and interpreters who may have dived into FTT and emerged with doubts and confusion because of the demanding and detailed nature of this work. We will provide background on importance of accuracy, footnotes, and format and also discuss challenges (accents, regionalisms, slang, etc.) and solutions specific to Spanish language FTT. Shortcuts, tips and suggestions will be provided for how to handle some of the nuance and confusion that is often present when performing FTT.

Details:
• Instructor will provide specific examples of transcription/translation challenges, stimulate discussion on various ways to resolve, demonstrate her format of choice and provide a list of “dos and don’ts”. Participants will be provided with a short audio (up to 3 minutes of audio) to transcribe during class to exemplify difficulties, ambiguity, clarity, format and use of footnote comments.
