Oftentimes, translators and interpreters come to this field in a very ad hoc way, without understanding the benefits of professionalizing their practice. Professionalizing goes beyond the legal and tax implications of setting up an LLC and bookkeeping, and this presentation aims to give translators and interpreters the fundamentals so they may run their solo practice with confidence and peace of mind.
This will be presented as a case study of real-life translation and interpretation firm, A Lingua Franca LLC (tax and legal disclaimer to be provided).

Valeria B. Delmar is a seasoned translation strategist and conference interpreter with a passion for delivering top-tier translation and interpretation solutions. An ATA-certified Spanish <> English translator and nationally certified healthcare interpreter, she holds a BA in French and psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso and an MA in Spanish Translation and Interpretation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Since 2004, Valeria has served diverse clients, including government, law enforcement, and global language service providers, in both freelance and in-house capacities. She owns A Lingua Franca LLC, a T&I consulting firm, and directs the translation and interpretation program at UTEP. An active member of the American Translators Association and the New Mexico Translators and Interpreters Association, Valeria is dedicated to advancing the T&I industry.
